Fire ratings are one of the most important—and most misunderstood—specifications when shopping for a gun safe.

 

Different manufacturers test their safes using different temperatures, testing procedures, and construction methods. That means a safe rated for 40 minutes at 1400°F isn't automatically better—or worse—than one rated for 75 minutes at 1200°F.

 

This guide explains how fire ratings work, what affects a safe's ability to protect its contents, and how to compare safes across different manufacturers.

One of the top reasons people choose to purchase Liberty gun safes is for the fire protection they offer.

 

Depending on the model you choose, you get anywhere from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours of fire resistance for your firearms and valuables.

 

The main goal is to keep the inside temperature of your safe low, for as long as possible. The longer time ratings will ensure the contents of your safe will be exposed to less heat for a longer time.

 

Unfortunately, safe fire ratings are not regulated. Liberty has based their fire rating system off the U.S. Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for a “full-scale house fire.”

  1. Liberty warranty coverage, registration requirements, component coverage, installation, removal, and replacement terms are governed by the current written warranty for the individual safe.
  2. Rhino and Kodiak warranty coverage generally applies to the original residential purchaser. Packaging, palletizing, removal, installation, locks, finishes, interiors, and electrical components may be subject to separate terms and time limits.
  3. Browning currently requires documentation, notarized ownership information, and a $25 fee to transfer the manufacturer’s warranty. Requirements and fees may change; confirm current terms with Browning.

Are Gun Safes Really Fireproof?

No. There is no such thing as a completely fireproof gun safe.
